OSBP is an intermediate used in the production of herbicides, insecticides, and fragrances. It is also as an intermediate for polymerization inhibitors, and stabilizer products.

Literature list this compound as a precursor for the manufacture of coumarins and benzofuran lipid lowering agents.

OSBP is insoluble in water but has solubility in alcohol, ether and alkalis, but it is corrosive and handling precautions are required.
