Coumarin 1 is chemically 7-(diethylamino)-4-methylcoumarin, a molecule with the electron donating diethylamino) group in the 7 position and electron withdrawing methyl group in the 4 position. The intra molecular charge transfer gives the molecule good light absorption and fluorescence. It is slightly soluble in methanol and ethanol and soluble in toluene.
