Deep Eutectic solvents are mixtures of Lewis or Brønsted Acids with bases, and are commonly mixtures of hydrogen bond donors and quaternary ammonium salts. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) are made from natural materials. Examples of NADES are molar mixtures of choline chloride and sugars.
Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are solvents prepared by mixing hydrogen bond donors and hydrogen bond acceptors to produce solvents with properties different from the parent compounds. Many have low toxicity and sustainability with useful properties such as low volatility, thermal stability and biodegradability. There is a wide range of possible applications. Examples are geology, mineral processing, metallurgy, metal polishing, metal recycling, agriculture and there are many other uses.
Deep eutectic solvents (DES) replace organic solvents that are toxic to human body. and attracted worldwide attention. DESs are usually liquids composed of two to three compounds. These compounds can self-combine through hydrogen bonds, forming a eutectic mixtures with melting points lower than that of each individual component. Most of the components used for synthesising DES are cheap and readily available. For example, the most commonly used choline chloride (ChCl) is a non-toxic, biodegradable and economical quaternary ammonium salt that can quickly form DES with a variety of hydrogen bond donors. The unique chemical properties and application advantages of DESs, such as adjustable solubility and high chemical stability, make them widely used in various scientific and technological fields, such as material modification, surface modification, material extraction, formulation chemistry extraction and so on.
