The History of Phthalocyanines
Phthalocyanine dyes and pigments are widely made, used and sold with a fascinating history going back to a discovery of blue impurity in the production of phthalimide at the Grangemouth works of Scottish Dyes in 1928. Scottish Dyes became a founder company of the ICI Dye Division.
In the production of phthalimide, ammonia gas was passed through molten phthalic anyhdride in iron vessels, but some batches were contaminated with a trace of blue impurity. Of course, studies confirmed the impurity was iron phthalocyanine and by 1935 Monastral Blue Copper Phthalocyanine was commercialised..
