Product name
Quinizarin 96%
Alternative names
Solvent Orange 86 (96%), 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone
Description
Quinizarin 96% (quin) is an impure but economical Solvent Orange 86 technical dye powder and intermediate chemical for other anthraquinone dyes, with solubility in solvents such as toluene. However, this grade has a high insoluble content. The alternative 98% grade has a low toluene insoluble content and is sold as Solvent Orange 86 light fast dye for ABS, polystyrene and acrylic polymers.
Quin is the inexpensive old fashioned colourant for oily materials and is is the intermediate for the synthesis of indanthrene and alizarin-derived dyes. The 1,4-hydroxy groups are reaction points for chlorine and bromine. Amination (replacement of an OH groups with an amine substituent) followed by sulphonation, produces dyes such as Acid Violet 43. Lake pigments are formed with calcium and barium.
Quinizarin 96% Scientific Applications
Advanced scientific applications with a range of optical, electronic, photo-catalytic and redox properties are recorded in the literature. The strong visible absorption offers possibilities for chemical modification. It is an ALD/MLD precursor subliming at 130 °C and the two hydroxyl groups are reactive. Hybrids with metals were studied as super capacitors with metal–organic dye frameworks. It can couple to semiconducting nano particles to create new low-energy luminescent states. A diverse range of uses were explored. For example Al3+ ions form highly luminescent and strongly coloured complexes and polymeric structures in solutions. Similar properties are observed with Ga3+ and In3+. Hybrid, organic and nano composite materials.can be formed.
Strongly coloured pink hybrid films were deposited with trimethyl aluminium and quinizarin at 175 °C with a growth rate of 0.28 nm per cycle. These films were not luminescent although their optical absorption spectra are similar to those of the corresponding solution. An attempt was made to dilute with pentaerythritol in a multi-layer structure, although this also did not produce luminescent films. The low sublimation temperature, good reactivity and large conjugated system opens the way for exploration of solid-state hybrid and organic films along many different technological pathways.
