Description
Solvent Orange 86 Uses and Identity
It is the orange dye for plastics, lubricants and oils. Solvent Orange 86 has other names quinizarin, quinizarine and 1,4-dihydroxy anthraquinone.
This inexpensive Solvent Orange 86 dye is an old fashioned colourant for plastics and has other uses including intermediate for the synthesis of indanthrene and alizarin-derived dyes. The 1,4 hydroxy groups are reaction points for chlorine and and bromine. Amination followed by sulphonation makes dyes such as Acid Violet 43. It is also used to form lake pigments with calcium and barium.
Solvent Orange 86 Scientific Applications
Advanced scientific applications include optical, electronic, photocatalytic and redox properties. The strong visible absorption gives possibilities for chemical modification. The dye sublimes at 130 °C and with two reactive hydroxyl groups is an ALD/MLD precursor. Hybrids with metals were studied as super capacitors with metal–organic dye frameworks. It can couple to semiconducting nanoparticles to create new low-energy luminescent states. A diverse range of uses were explored. For example Al3+ ions form highly luminescent and strongly coloured complexes and polymeric structures in solutions. Similar properties are observed with Ga3+ and In3+. Hybrid, organic and nanocomposite materials.can be formed.
Strongly coloured pink hybrid films were deposited with trimethyl aluminium and quinizarin at 175 °C with a growth rate of 0.28 nm per cycle. These films were not luminescent although their optical absorption spectra are similar to those of the corresponding solution. An attempt was made to dilute with pentaerythritol in a multilayer structure, although this also did not produce luminescent films. The low sublimation temperature, good reactivity and large conjugated system opens the way for exploration of solid-state hybrid and organic films along many different technological pathways.
