The mechanism of attraction to cellulose is binding to 1–3 beta and 1–4 beta polysaccharides structures in the cell walls of fungi, plants, and protozoa. It is widely used in plant cell biology research, for the staining of cell walls of both algae and higher plants. It is also useful in medicine as a sensitive tool for the visualization and identification of fungi in biopsy samples.

SR2200 is a liquid stain that is easy to use and handle. It is dilutable in water, but dilutions must be made in brown (non actinic) glassware to prevent ingress of ultra violet light as the stain is light sensitive after dilution. Dilutions should be stored in a dark place when not in use.
